Here are the MPs whose SMCs will be gone in GE2025 & why: EBRC report
Population changes have impacted these SMCs.

The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) report is out, and some Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) will be eliminated.

Five of them won't be around for the upcoming general election, while six new ones will be created. Nine SMCs are unaffected, bringing the new total number of SMCs to 15.

Here are the five SMCs, the reasons why the EBRC recommended dissolving them while creating new ones, as well as the current Members of Parliament who will be affected.

SMCs no more

Bukit Batok

This was one of the more closely contested SMCs in GE2020, featuring Murali Pillai of the PAP, Minister of State for Law and Transport, running against Chee Soon Juan, Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

Murali triumphed with 15,500 votes to Chee's 12,787, a 45.2 per cent to 54.8 per cent split.

But why was Bukit Batok removed? According to the EBRC, it is related to developments in Hong Kah North:

"Hong Kah North SMC has grown significantly and will continue to grow rapidly in the coming years, due to new housing developments in Tengah and Bukit Batok West. It has become too big to remain as an SMC.

The Committee recommended that the Tengah estates be absorbed into Chua Chu Kang GRC.

To maintain Chua Chu Kang GRC as a four-MP GRC while accommodating significant future population growth in Tengah, the Committee recommended carving out the Bukit Gombak and Hillview estates to form a new Bukit Gombak SMC."

And therefore:

"Even with the Tengah estates being absorbed into Chua Chu Kang GRC, the remaining Hong Kah North SMC, comprising Bukit Batok West estates, is still too big and growing.

The Committee recommended that the remaining polling districts of Hong Kah North SMC, together with the adjacent polling districts in Bukit Batok and Yuhua SMCs, merge with Jurong GRC to form a new Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC."

Hong Kah North

This is represented by Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability & the Environment.

However, as seen above, the EBRC determined that Hong Kah North has grown too large to remain as an SMC.

Khor made her political debut in 2001, and first represented Hong Kah North SMC when it was created in 2011.

MacPherson

MacPherson is represented by Tin Pei Ling, who made her debut in 2011 and won MacPherson when it was newly created as an SMC in 2015.

According to the EBRC:

"Given the high population growth in Potong Pasir SMC because of new HDB developments in Bidadari, the Committee recommended moving some polling districts from Potong Pasir SMC to Marine Parade GRC.

It also recommended that Marine Parade GRC absorbs MacPherson SMC and an adjacent polling district from Mountbatten SMC, and remain as a 5-MP GRC."

Tin was one of PAP's best-performing candidates in 2020, winning with 71.74 per cent of the vote.

Tin beat Goh Meng Seng, who announced that his People's Power Party will contest Nee Soon GRC in GE2025.

Recently, Tin announced she would be taking up a new role as the co-president of Singapore-based digital asset platform MetaComp, having worked at DCS Card Centre and Grab.

Punggol West

Sun Xueling, Minister of State for Home Affairs, represents Punggol West SMC.

She beat Tan Chen Chen of the Workers' Party with a vote share of nearly 61 per cent in 2020.

Why was her SMC absorbed into the newly-formed Punggol GRC? As the EBRC put it:

"Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC has seen the largest increase in the number of electors since the last GE, and will continue to grow with new housing developments.

Hence the Committee recommended carving out the Punggol estates in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, to merge with Punggol West SMC to form a new four-MP Punggol GRC.

This will also better reflect the identity of the estates in Punggol town."

Yuhua

The last SMC to be removed is represented by Grace Fu, the Minister for Sustainability & the Environment.

Of the MPs whose SMC has been removed, Fu is the only Cabinet Minister.

She beat Robin Low of the SDP with a 70.54 per cent vote share in 2020.

Yuhua was also affected by the changes related to Hong Kah North, as the EBRC stated:

"Even with the Tengah estates being absorbed into Chua Chu Kang GRC, the remaining Hong Kah North SMC, comprising Bukit Batok West estates, is still too big and growing.

The Committee recommended that the remaining polling districts of Hong Kah North SMC, together with the adjacent polling districts in Bukit Batok and Yuhua SMCs, merge with Jurong GRC to form a new Jurong East- Bukit Batok GRC."

Fu, responding to the EBRC report on Mar. 11, noted the changes, and gave her assurance to residents that her commitment to them "remains unwavering", saying she would continue engaging them.

Fu could potentially serve as the new anchor minister for the new Jurong East - Bukit Batok GRC.
